Negative of large group in front of unidentified building at the Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal (A.M. & N.) College (now called University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas. Sixth from the left is Dr. John Brown Watson, President of A.M. & N. John Brown Watson was born in Smith County, Texas, in 1872 to Frank and Chrystial (Gary) Watson. Watson received degrees from Bishop College in Marshall in 1889, Colgate College, Brown University in 1904, and a honorary master of arts and doctor of laws from Morehouse College. Watson taught at Smith County schools and Morehouse College. In 1907 he married Hattie Rutherford, daughter of S.W. Rutherford who founded of the National Benefit Life Insurance Company of Washington, D.C. Aside from teaching, Watson also worked with the International Young Men's Christian Association among Negroes in 1909 and in the insurance business in Atlanta, Georgia in 1917. While Watson was a receiver for the Atlanta State Savings Bank from 1921 to 1923, he was asked to become the president of Leland College in Baker, Louisiana. Watson served as the President of A.M. & N. from 1928 until his death on December 6, 1942. During his administration, he reinstated a four-year degree program, recuited good faculty members and increased the student popultion from 36 to 700.
